Library of Congress Fishing Industry Project

Phil Mello has been photographing on New Bedford’s waterfront for over 40 years. He started as an amateur, documenting the inner world of the fishing industry in which he worked. Phil knows these people and this place well, he is currently Plant Manager at Bergies Seafood, New Bedford, so his waterfront access is unencumbered.

His photography has become part of a major Library of Congress project to capture and preserve the faces of New Bedford’s fishing industry. The project will be available to the public soon, it focuses on local fishing industry workers and their jobs, each vital to the daily operations of supplying seafood to market.
